Mary Davies Library and Community Centre is currently experiencing a network outage. The library is open to the community however there is no access to public computers or WiFi, and the telephone system is also not in operation. All other branch libraries remain operating as usual.

About the Youth Centre

The Rockingham Youth Centre (RYC) is a safe and inclusive space for young people aged 12-24 years (the month they turn 12) to drop in and get involved. Programs and workshops are held during school term and holidays and are targeted at a variety of age ranges. If a young person is needing support, information, referral to a service provider or access to a PC or Wi-Fi, they are welcome to drop-in anytime during our operating hours and speak with one of our team members.


Our vision is for young people to feel engaged, encouraged and empowered to build a lifelong connection to the community. Our mission is to create a supportive environment for young people, aged 12-24 years. Rockingham Youth Centre provides a safe and inclusive space filled with diversity, fun and comfort. We aim to engage, support and inspire young people, through the provision of social, recreational and educational opportunities in hope of improving overall mindset and well-being.

Where are we?

The Rockingham Youth Centre is located on MacKinnon Street in Rockingham. Our operating hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5.30pm daily.

Who are we?

Our Youth Centre team is committed to assisting the social, emotional, psychological and physical development of young people aged 12-24 years by providing a professional youth-friendly service addressing the needs of young people.

Youth Workers are available for information, support, referral and advocacy, individual case management, groups and programs. Community Development Officers are available for early intervention and prevention workshops, information sessions and forums and community events in local education and community settings for young people aged 12-24.

Youth Workers

Our Youth Workers provide support, advocacy, referrals, information, and case management for young people aged 12-24 who live or study in Rockingham.

Our service is designed to focus on short-term goals, aiming to achieve meaningful outcomes within a six-session timeframe. Sessions run for 45 minutes to one hour, are held fortnightly, and are available by appointment only from Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, at the Rockingham Youth Centre.

Young people who require additional support after completing their initial six sessions are welcome to reapply; however, this may be subject to referral wait times.

Please note: While our Youth Workers can assist with referrals to appropriate mental health services, we do not provide therapeutic or long-term counselling.

Our Youth Workers can assist with a variety of topics, including:

  • training/education support (e.g. short courses, TAFE, university)
  • alternative education pathways (e.g. Alta-1, SMYL)
  • employment assistance (e.g. resume writing, interview skills)
  • life skills support (e.g. budgeting, utilities, obtaining identification)
  • accessing community resources (e.g. food, clothing, legal support)
  • housing and accommodation support (e.g. finding or maintaining housing, emergency accommodation)
  • future planning (e.g. career goals, life planning)
  • linking to mental health services (e.g. research, introductions, external referrals)
  • support with transitions (e.g. school-to-work, care-to-independence, engaging with community programs or activities).

Community Development Officers

Our Community Development Officers provide young people aged 12-24 years and their families with early intervention and prevention workshops, information sessions, activities, programs and community events, both at RYC and throughout the Rockingham area.
 
Workshops and information sessions cover a variety of topics including:
  • mental health
  • suicide prevention
  • resilience
  • sexual health
  • drug and alcohol use
  • transition to high school
  • youth life skills
  • education and employment.

Rockingham Youth Centre Membership

RYC memberships are for young people aged 12–24 years. Membership is free and it enables young people to book into our programs each school term and school holidays.
 
To become a member, please complete the RYC Membership form. Alternatively, you can complete a form in person with a staff member.

Rockingham Youth Reference Group

The Rockingham Youth Reference Group (RYRG) is a group of young people aged 14-24 years who contribute to the success of the RYC by providing input into programming, events and advocacy. They act as a reference group on behalf of young people in Rockingham, contributing to the RYC and across the City of Rockingham.

Members have the opportunity to develop their advocacy and leadership skills, meet likeminded young people, gain an understanding of how local government operates, and develop event and project planning skills. Recruitment for new members occurs every two years, with a yearly review. See the Role Statement below for further information on recruiting for the RYRG.

Can I hire a room?

The Rockingham Youth Centre is a multi-functional facility designed by and for young people. The City is committed to activating the centre to its full potential. We invite service providers working with local young people to use the space for support/counselling services, workshops and relevant youth events.
 
Dedicated spaces can be booked on a casual or ongoing basis.
