Beaches

The City of Rockingham is renowned for its safe, calm, shallow-water swimming and sandy beaches. Some of the best beaches in the area include Rockingham Beach, Palm Beach, Safety Bay, Shoalwater, Warnbro, Port Kennedy and Waikiki Foreshore. The Point Peron area is known for its great snorkelling and diving

Swimming Pontoons are available seasonally and are located at Palm Beach Foreshore, Rockingham Foreshore and Waikiki Foreshore.

Secret Harbour Beach is patrolled weekends and public holidays from October through to the end of March. From the start of December through to the end of January it is patrolled on weekdays by a professional lifeguard. Swim between the flags, and if you are unsure of your ability, do not swim alone.

Swimming pontoons

To help you make the most of our beautiful coastline, we have four swimming pontoons that are available seasonally, from the last week of November until the end of the March each year.

Three pontoons are located adjacent to Rockingham Foreshore and one is located adjacent to Waikiki Foreshore. 

Frequently asked questions

What size are the pontoons?

We have four swimming pontoons. The pontoon deck area is 6.9m long x 3.3m wide, with safety ladders at each end of the pontoons. The pontoons provide a 500mm freeboard at all times between the top of the pontoon and the water level.

Where are the swimming pontoons located and how far out are they?

Three of the pontoons are located adjacent to Rockingham Foreshore, Cockburn Sound:

  • Palm Beach Foreshore: located in Cockburn Sound, opposite Fisher Street and the Esplanade, Rockingham. The pontoon is located 60m east of Palm Beach Jetty and is accessible from the beach or the jetty. The water depth 7m.
  • Rockingham Foreshore (Railway Terrace): located in Cockburn Sound, north-west of Railway Terrace/Rockingham Beach Road, Rockingham. The pontoon is located 100m offshore in 6m of water.
  • Rockingham Foreshore (Flinders Lane): located in Cockburn Sound – south west of Flinders Lane /Rockingham Beach Road, Rockingham. The pontoon is located 110m offshore in 7.5m of water.

One pontoon is located adjacent to Waikiki Foreshore:

  • Waikiki Foreshore, Safety Bay Road/Malibu Road, Safety Bay: located in Warnbro Sound opposite south east of Malibu Road, Safety Bay. The pontoon is located 75m below the high water mark in a depth of 2.5m.
What time of the year are the swimming pontoons available?

To avoid damage to the pontoon platforms due to winter, spring and autumn storms, the pontoons are deployed and connected to their moorings in the last week of November each year so they are available during the peak summer season.

Depending on the weather conditions the pontoon platforms are removed by commercial divers at the end of the March to avoid damage during storms.

Where are the swimming pontoons stored?

The pontoons are transported and stored at the City’s Depot for inspection and maintenance over the winter months.

Are vessels permitted to berth against the pontoons?

No. Vessels are not permitted to berth against the pontoons. Should vessels berth against the pontoons, please contact the Water Police on 9442 8600.

Who should I contact if the pontoons are vandalised or show signs of damage?

Swimming pools

The Aqua Jetty at Warnbro has a 50m heated outdoor pool, a heated 25m indoor pool and a lagoon style fun pool for young children, along with a fully enclosed water slide. It offers swimming lessons and pool exercise classes. For more information and opening times, contact the Aqua Jetty on 9591 0888.

Rockingham Aquatic Centre on Council Ave has a 50m outdoor pool and often has inflatable play equipment for children. It is opening from September to April and has a swimming club and swimming lessons. For more information and opening times, contact the Aquatic Centre on 9528 0333.
