Dementia-friendly community

Our focus on dementia

Dementia is the single greatest cause of disability in older Australians. It is projected that the number of people living with dementia in Rockingham will significantly increase over the next 30 years. By 2050 the number will be six times compared to that of 2010, and the City will then be the WA metropolitan local government with the third highest number of people living with dementia.

We have made a commitment through our Seniors Strategy 2017-2021 to conduct initiatives that improve access for people living with dementia and improve community awareness of dementia. As such, we have been recognised by Alzheimer’s WA for our contributions to becoming more dementia-friendly.

Various community, City staff and volunteering educational workshops and communication campaigns are conducted each year. We have also implemented a number of ongoing programs in partnership with Alzheimer’s WA and Rockingham and Districts Alzheimer’s Inc.
