Application process

Who can work for the City?

We employ applicants with legal rights to work in Australia, including:

  • Australian and/or New Zealand citizens
  • permanent residents
  • temporary residents with permission to work.

As part of the recruitment process, we will confirm your eligibility to legally work in Australia and you may be asked to supply original documents pertaining to this (Australian Birth or Citizenship certificate, Australian or New Zealand Passport, Passport from another country if you hold an Australian Visa or evidence of resident status).

Application guidelines

All applications must be submitted online via the BigRedSky portal.

Please ensure that your application includes the following attachments:

  • resume (including personal contact details, summary of skills, work history, education and training and licences or professional memberships)
  • covering letter (briefly addressing suitability for the role including skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications).

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time as listed in the information pack. Late applications will not be accepted.

All applications receive an automated email response once successfully lodged. 

We do not accept unsolicited applications or refer to past applications for current vacancies. Please apply directly for each advertised position.

Interview guidelines

If you are selected for an interview, we will contact you by email to schedule a suitable day and time.

The selection panel of two or three interviewers will conduct the interviews using behavioural questions based on the essential requirements outlined in the position description. You may be asked to provide examples from your past experience.

Applicants will be contacted within a few weeks after all interviews are conducted. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified via email.

The next stage: Pre-employment checking

References

You will be asked to provide the names and contact numbers for at least two work-related referees, with one being a (preferably current) supervisor or manager.

Medical assessments

You may be required to complete a pre-employment medical including independent medical assessment, functional capacity assessment and laboratory drug and alcohol test to determine the applicants’ suitability to carry out the physical requirements of the position.

National Police Clearance

You will be asked to provide a National Police Clearance no more than three months old and you will be guided through this online process by our Human Resource Development Team.  

Qualifications/Licences

You will be required to provide academic qualifications, licences (including drivers, high risk etc) and any other documents relevant to the position. We may verify qualifications and/or licences via external verification providers prior to and during your employment with us.

Eligibility to work

We will conduct a Visa Entitlement Verification through the Department of Home Affairs prior to and at regular intervals during employment to confirm eligibility to work.

Other

You may be requested to undertake other selection tests relevant to the position including practical or psychological testing.
