Project summary

We have transformed Churchill Park's Play Space into one large heritage-themed play area for all to enjoy.

Play space

Works are now complete at Churchill Park! By transforming the former play areas into one larger area, this heritage-themed play space is now more accessible for everyone to enjoy. The new design tells the story of Rockingham’s early days, drawing on the theme ‘Forest to Sea’ and the area's timber industry heritage.

Officially opened on 25 July 2025, the Churchill Park Play Space has already proven popular, with many children exploring its unique and imaginative features. Inspired by Rockingham’s timber history, the space brings local stories to life in a fun and engaging way. Accessibility was a major focus, with new pathways, 17 accessible shelters, and plenty of shaded areas now in place to make the space welcoming for all ages and abilities.

Please note that custom signage is yet to be installed in this location.

    FAQs

Is there a theme to this new play area?

Yes, the theme is 'Forrest to the Sea'. This tells the generalised story of the early days of Rockingham.

What types of items have been installed?

A variety of items, including accessible play elements, swings, climbing elements, nature-based items, reclaimed timbers, and stone etc.

    Why were wood chips installed?

The wood chips installed are specific soft fall mulch, designed for play grounds.

The mulch complies with Australian Standard AS/NZS 4422:1996- Playground surfacing.

This type of material, compliments the overall play space theme.

How big will the play area be?

The two existing play areas have been combined. The new play area is approximately 2.5 times bigger than the existing.

    Why combine?

Combining play areas provides accessibility and inclusive play options. This means everyone, no matter their ability, age, cultural or social background can play together. This includes parents, grandparents and carers, not just kids!

Will there be areas to sit?

Yes, bench seats have been installed around the perimeter of the play area. Each seating node has space alongside for wheelchairs, prams and scooters etc. There is also a large area outside the play area to picnic on the grass.

What accessible options will be installed?

Play elements have been placed in locations to provide for inclusive play. This includes rubber softfall for access within the site, play boards, accessible swings, slide, talky tubes and communication boards.

    Will shade sails be installed?

No. There will be no shade sails as this space has been designed to use the existing trees to provide natural shade.

Will there be any picnic areas?

Two new accessible picnic shelters with table and chairs have been installed directly connected to the path around the new play space. Five more new picnic shelters have also been installed in Churchill Park.

    Are you removing the trees?

No trees were removed as part of the project. The City engaged an arborist for this project.

Will there be a drinking fountain?

Yes, two new drinking fountains have been installed in accessible locations.

    Why is this happening?

This is part of the City's asset renewal program. Additionally, this area sits within the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Master Plan so the project must align with the masterplan.

Why are you not building the water play park as per the master plan?

The proposed water play area is currently unfunded and will be considered in future capital works, when funding becomes available.

    Will access be improved?

The City has installed a new access path within Churchill Park. The play area has direct access from this path.

    What about a basketball court?

A basketball court in this location is not included. Future development of Wanliss Street Youth Activation node will include this element.

    Will fencing be installed?

No fencing is proposed to be installed as part of this project.
