Project summary

We are transforming Churchill Park's Play Space into one large heritage-themed play area for all to enjoy.

Play space

The existing play areas within Churchill Park are scheduled to be connected and transformed into one large play area to create a new accessible, heritage-themed play space for all to enjoy. The play space will convey the story of the early days of Rockingham, ‘Forest to Sea’; the days of the timber industry.

The play space will include:

  • an all abilities play space
  • rubber softfall (note: most of the nature play area will have a woodchip base)
  • nature-based play, under existing trees
  • nautical themes
  • historical themes
  • imaginative play
  • multi-aged
  • seating
  • path network.

The total play space will be approximately 2.5 times bigger than the existing areas. No trees will be removed as part of this project.

Work will commence in May 2025.

Safety guidelines

Portions of the foreshore reserve will be impacted from time to time, with temporary fencing and barricades restricting access to those areas.

We ask that residents follow these safety guidelines while works are being done:

  • Do not enter the restricted areas of the reserve during works and out of hours.
  • Do not approach plant operators for conversation. There are many hazards, which place the worker, yourself and others at risk.
  • Do not stop the workers from performing their duties as this could result in unnecessary delays and place you at risk.
  • Be aware of you own surroundings and keep dogs on leads at all times.
  • Follow the instructions of the on-ground staff.
  • Parking restrictions will apply.

    FAQs

When are the works commencing on this project?

On-ground works are not taking place until May 2025. This allows the contractor to fabricate the bespoke play elements ready to be installed from May 2025.

Is there a theme to this new play area?

Yes, the theme will be 'Forrest to the Ocean'. This tells the generalised story of the early days of Rockingham.

The two existing play areas will be combined. The new play area will be approximately 2.5 times bigger than the existing.

Two new accessible picnic shelters with table and chairs will be installed directly connected to the path around the new play space. Five more new picnic shelters will also be installed in Churchill Park. The shelters works are separate to this play space project.

    Are you removing the trees?

No tree will be removed as part of the project. The City has engaged an arborist for this project.

Will there be a drinking fountain?

Yes, two new drinking fountains will be installed in accessible locations.

    Why is this happening?

This is part of the City of Rockingham's asset renewal program. Additionally, this area sits within the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Master Plan so the project must align with the masterplan.

Why are you not building the water play park as per the master plan?

The proposed water play area is currently unfunded and will be considered in future capital works, when funding becomes available.

    Will access be improved?

The City has installed a new access path within Churchill Park. The play area will have direct access from this path.

    What about a basketball court?

A basketball court in this location is not included. Future development of Wanliss Street Youth Activation node will include this element.
