Council Endorses Draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan

Date15 October 2021

At the ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday 12 October 2021, the City of Rockingham Council endorsed the draft Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2022 - 2026 for public comment. The DAIP is a legislative requirement under the Western Australian Disability Services Act 1993. It outlines the steps the City will take over a four year period to ensure the City is an inclusive and accessible community that people with disability and their families can participate in.

In forming the draft the City engaged in extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders such as the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee, Seniors Advisory Committee, families and staff from Rockingham Beach Education Support Centre, and members of the Mandurah, Kwinana and Rockingham Access and Inclusion Network. The City also hosted two community workshops to provide an opportunity for local residents to have their say.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the DAIP addressed eight key outcomes and would play a crucial part in fulfilling the City’s accessibility objectives outlined in the Strategic Community Plan.

“The City of Rockingham is a diverse community and people with disability and their families are an integral part of it,” Mayor Sammels said.  “The new DAIP will focus on making sure the City continues to be an accessible and inclusive place that matches the needs of the people who live here. Importantly, the DAIP address two key aspirations in the Strategic Community Plan, including growing and nurturing community connectedness, and planning for future generations.

The draft is now open for public comment and the City encourages the community to share their thoughts.

Public comment on the DAIP is open until 4 November 2021. View the plan and share your thoughts here.
