Project summary

Safety Bay Road and Mandurah Road intersection safety improvements.

Project status

The City is thankful  for the recent feedback regarding the proposed vegetation clearing within the roundabout at the Safety Bay Road and Mandurah Road intersection. The consultation period for this project closed on 15 November 2023 and the majority of submissions received indicated support for the vegetation to be cleared.  According to the Main Roads WA Crash Data 2018 – 2022, there was a high number of crashes associated with the sightline of traffic and pedestrians when travelling through this intersection. The proposed clearing of the vegetation (including trees) in the central island will improve this.

This projects forms part of our commitment to increasing road safety within our City. Clearing of the centre island will commence in the early part of 2024. The future treatment of the roundabout has not yet been determined and will need to consider the increasing volume of traffic circulating the roundabout and the associated risk for City maintenance staff to access this site. Frequency and cost of required maintenance will also need to be considered. Night works to clear the existing vegetation is expected to take place on 16 April 2024-17 April 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need to clear the centre of this roundabout?

According to the crash data 2018 - 2022 from Main Roads Western Australia, there were high number of crashes due to issues with the line of sight for traffic and pedestrians when travelling through this intersection.  The vegetation in the central island is affecting the view of road users and it is therefore proposed for clearing to mitigate this issue.

Will trees be part of future planting?

The City may consider trees strategically located where the tree canopy is outside the sightline of motorists and pedestrians.

What is the possible future treatment within the roundabout?

With high volume of traffic travelling around the roundabout, it is risky for the our crews to access the centre of the roundabout for maintenance. Therefore we will be exploring options such as dry planting and hardscape to minimise the maintenance required and to reduce costs.
