Project summary

We are building a pump and jump track in Safety Bay.

About

Design of the Safety Bay Pump and Jump track is underway! Thank you to the dedicated group of young riders who turned out at Safety Bay Library to help the designers understand what it is that you want.

Construction will begin in May 2024 and is due to be ready to ride on before the end of June.

The track will be built in June Road Reserve, near the corner where Joseph Road meets June Road.

This project has been nominated for funding under the federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts via the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. Funding provided by this program will support additional amenity at the pump and jump track site which may include shade, water bubbler, seating and parking.

Background

Safety Bay residents told Council that older kids needed more facilities in the area. Their preferred facility was a bike track. This is to replace the ones built by kids in various nearby reserves. Council supported the residents' request and allocated funds to build a pump and jump track in 2023/2024.

A pump and jump track is a looped bike track with bumps, banked turns and jumps. The track allows bike riders to practice bike handling skills on a variety of features.  The features cater for a range of skill levels.

Developing a pump and jump track helps to:

  1. meet the need for recreation facilities for older children
  2. promote physical activity and so improve health and wellbeing
  3. promote the space as family friendly and intergenerational, and
  4. improve passive surveillance through activating less utilised open spaces.

A pump and jump track will also help the City to deliver community outcomes expressed in the Strategic Community Plan 2023 - 2033 such as:

  1. community health and wellbeing
  2. sustainable natural green spaces, and
  3. plan for sustainable growth.

Project Updates

Update: April 2024

The designs for the Safety Bay Pump Track are in!

See the images below to see what it’s going to look like, including a drawing for the more technically minded.

There are two lines on the track – a “lower” line that works as a pump track, and the jumps line that includes four jumps.  The jumps are up to 1.4 m high.

We’ve been working hard to get the designs right, including all the feedback from our consultation.  It’s taken us a bit longer to get here, but we’re now looking to begin construction in mid-May and are still on track to be complete by the end of June.

Update: November 2023

At its ordinary meeting on Tuesday 28 November 2023, the City of Rockingham Council approved June Road Reserve as the location for the new Safety Bay Pump and Jump Track.

Council’s decision relied on extensive consultation conducted by the City. The consultation identified strengths and weaknesses for the two proposed locations: June Road Reserve in Safety Bay and Apex Reserve in Shoalwater. Council preferred June Road Reserve for several reasons. These included the majority of children engaged during consultation wanting the track at this location, better outcomes for wildlife in the area, and less impact on other park users in comparison to Apex Reserve.
