Visit Castaways

Experience selected Castaways sculptures through guided tactile tours designed for visitors with disability, including those who are who are blind or vision impaired, along with their friends and family. Participants are invited to safely explore artworks through touch while learning about the artists, materials and creative process.

Tours are conducted by DADAA and are free, however bookings are essential.

Beach accessibility equipment is available at the Rockingham Foreshore to help visitors with limited mobility access the beach and view the Main Exhibition sculptures up close.

Beach wheelchairs

Beach wheelchairs are designed specifically for use on sand and in or near salt water. Limited beach wheelchairs are available for community members to loan free of charge at the Information Tent at Churchill Park. Bookings are essential and Photo identification that shows your full name and address, such as a Drivers Licence, is required.

Beach walkers

Beach walkers make it easier for people to access and enjoy the sand. Limited beach walkers are available for community members to loan free of charge at the Information Tent at Churchill Park. Bookings are essential and Photo identification that shows your full name and address, such as a Drivers Licence, is required. 

Beach access matting

Beach access matting will be in place for the duration of Castaways for wheelchair and pram access to most artworks exhibited on the beach.

To support visitors with accessibility needs, the City offers pre-approved accessible parking on the Beach Plaza for eligible organised group visits to the Castaways Sculpture Awards.

Who can apply?

This service is available for organised group visits by:

• disability service providers
• aged care facilities
• community organisations supporting people with disability or limited mobility.

Individual visitors are encouraged to use the existing accessible (ACROD) parking bays located around the Rockingham Foreshore and must display a valid ACROD permit where applicable.

Booking Requirements

Accessible parking is available daily from 9am to 5pm throughout the exhibition (24 October – 1 November) and must be booked in advance.

To allow sufficient time for approval, requests should be submitted at least five business days before your visit.

To apply, please email customer@rockingham.wa.gov.au and include:

• organisation name
• preferred visit date
• arrival and departure times (maximum four hours)
• number of vehicles (Up to two vehicles can be accommodated per booking. Please contact the City if your group requires additional accessible parking).
• contact person and phone number.

Conditions of Use

• Parking approvals are valid for up to four hours to allow multiple groups to access the service throughout the day.
• All groups must receive written approval from the City before arriving.
• Vehicles should display a valid ACROD permit where applicable.
• Approved vehicles must park in the allocated location and follow directions from City staff to ensure safe access for all visitors.
• Accessible parking is subject to operational requirements and availability.

Accessible public toilets and a Changing Places facility are located in Churchill Park near the Castaways exhibition. 

The Changing Places accessible bathroom is larger than standard accessible bathrooms which are specifically designed for people with high support needs and their carers. It is only available with the use of a Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK). 

An accessible toilet that does not require the use of an MLAK key is located in the public toilets adjacent to the Changing Places facility.
