Infrastructure Projects Planning and design

Project summary

Road safety upgrades are planned for Currie Street, with works starting in 2026/27. Improvements include a roundabout, raised plateau, line marking and road widening.

As part of the City's ongoing commitment to road safety and traffic management, targeted upgrades are proposed along Currie Street to help reduce traffic incidents, improve safety and enhance accessibility for all road users.

After consultation with the community, the proposed upgrades include:

  • A solid line marking between Hanretty Street and Parkland Drive

  • a new roundabout at Axminster Street

  • road widening at Kingsbridge Road

  • a raised plateau at Welch Way.

The proposed plan has been developed using road safety best practices and take into account the existing infrastructure.

FAQs (Frequently asked questions)

The raised plateaus and roundabout are designed to improve road safety by reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing visibility. These traffic treatments aim to make Currie Street safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

If your driveway is impacted, the City will reinstate it at no cost to the property owner. Property access will be maintained throughout construction, with appropriate traffic management in place to assist residents as needed.

The City will assess the existing street lighting at each proposed treatment location and will upgrade it to meet Western Power standards, if required.

Works are expected to begin in the 2026/2027 financial year. Residents will be notified of the construction schedule closer to the start of works.

Community consultation on the proposed works closed on 5 September 2025. Changes have been made to the original design to reflect the feedback received.
