FOGO Updates

You may have noticed reports about clarification to what can and can't go in FOGO bins across WA. The good news for Rockingham's great sorts is that we were already doing most of it. 

The only changes are the following now go in the general waste bin instead of FOGO bin:

  • Soiled pizza boxes (hot tip: if the lid is clean, rip it off and put it in your recycling) 
  • Paper towels/tissues
  • Hair/pet fur

The Waste Authority has provided this updated guidance for local governments, and we'll continue to share local information that helps make waste sorting as easy as possible.

And while we're talking FOGO, there's plenty to celebrate. Since the service launched, Rockingham residents have recovered an impressive 22,251 tonnes of FOGO waste. That's a fantastic result and a testament to the effort our community puts into getting the right things into the right bins.

What to put in each bin

General household waste accepted in the red lidded bin are:

  • meat trays and soft plastics
  • nappies, cotton buds, tissues and other personal hygiene items
  • animal waste and droppings
  • broken toys
  • old clothing, rags and textiles
  • paper towels and tissues
  • soiled pizza boxes 
  • human hair and pet fur
  • broken ceramics.

Waste is landfilled at the Millar Road Landfill, Baldivis.

Clean and empty recyclables accepted in the yellow lidded bin are:

  • glass jars and bottles
  • plastic bottles (lids removed)
  • plastic margarine, yoghurt or icecream containers
  • aluminium soft drink cans
  • steel food, Milo or coffee tins
  • clean paper (not shredded) and newspapers
  • magazines and junk mail
  • clean pizza boxes
  • flattened cardboard boxes, tubes and egg cartons.

Recyclables are sorted at a Material Recovery Facility in Bibra Lake.
