Pablo Hughes has taken out the major $10,000 prize for his photograph Menu del Dia. Hughes said he was thrilled to receive the award and encouraged by the recognition of his work.
The winning entries were selected by a panel of experienced arts professionals from across Western Australia.
- First Prize ($10,000): Pablo Hughes – Menu del Dia (photography)
- Small Sculpture Award: Jennifer Cochrane – Sleeper Self-portrait #15 (made from a burnt jarrah railway sleeper)
- First Nations Artist Award: Brett Nannup – Wardong (neon light and etched steel)
- Emerging Artist Award: Dave McLaughlin – Rituals (print on aluminium)
- Local Resident Award: Lesley Tutte (Warnbro) – Memory of Encounter (graphite drawing)
Three artists also received Highly Commended awards: Sheree Dohnt, Pip Milton and Gabby Testaferrata Olivier.
City of Rockingham Mayor Lorna Buchan said the Art Prize is an important event for the local community.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our community to experience high-quality artwork right here in Rockingham, while supporting both emerging and established artists,” the Mayor said. “We encourage everyone to visit the exhibition, see the incredible range of talent on display and have their say in the People’s Choice Award.”
A total of 74 finalists are exhibiting their work at the Rockingham Arts Centre. The exhibition is open to the public until 5 July, with free entry and parking.
The exhibition is open from Wednesdays to Sundays from 10 to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm at the Rockingham Arts Centre, 11 Kent Street, Rockingham.
Visitors can also vote in person for the People’s Choice Award.
