This section of Safety Bay Road was built more than 20 years ago. Since 2006, traffic volumes have almost tripled from around 13,000 vehicles a day to 34,000 in 2025.
As new housing has developed nearby, the road environment has changed while the speed limit has stayed the same. More homes mean more people walking and cycling, and more vehicles using side streets to access Safety Bay Road.
The increase in traffic and these changes have led to several serious crashes at intersections, as well as pedestrian accidents.
Reducing the speed limit will help make this section of Safety Bay Road safer for everyone by lowering the risk and severity of crashes.
Additional to 70km/h speed limit signs, Main Roads will also be installing “New speed limit ahead” signage leading up to the road section.

The section of Safety Bay Road where the speed limit will be changed is 1 kilometre long.
- Time to travel 1 kilometre at 80km/h: 45 seconds
- Time to travel 1 kilometre at 70km/h: 51.4 seconds
Travel times will increase by 6.4 seconds in free flow traffic conditions because of this speed limit change
