Safety Barrier installation on Stakehill Road near Ukich Place

Following the November 2022 Council resolution, the City conducted an investigation and feasibility study into installing crash barrier along Stakehill Road adjacent to Ukich Place in Baldivis. The primary purpose of the barrier is to protect errant vehicles from trees, power poles, and slopes near the road. The roadside hazards along Stakehill Road pose serious risks to motorists. From a safety perspective, removing these hazards would be ideal, involving clearing all trees and undergrounding power lines. However, other factors, such as environmental impacts and changes to the local character caused by tree removal, may make hazard elimination impractical.

Before the Council resolution, the City conducted independent Road Safety Inspections that recommended actions, such as reviewing signage and line markings and adjusting the speed limit. The City has implemented these recommendations, including reducing the speed limit from 80 km/h to 70 km/h.

An external consultant appointed to evaluate the feasibility of safety barriers concluded that their installation is practical and would enhance road safety by reducing the severity of run-off-road crashes. The consultant recommended five crash barriers at designated locations as outlined in a concept design shared with the community in July 2024.

The detailed design for these safety barriers has been completed. The City plans to install them in early 2026/27. Final drawings 2512008-201 B and 2512008-202 B are available for viewing below
