Project summary

The City of Rockingham, Rockingham Youth Reference Group (RYRG) and RAC Ignite have worked with local young people to transform the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre walkway into a creative, safe and social hub for the community.

Across a series of workshops, co-design sessions and a three-day Build Week, young people helped plan and build a new outdoor space featuring colourful pavement art, road-safety themed murals, seating and pavement games. The makeover supports safer walking, riding and eRideable use around the library, and creates a welcoming place for people of all ages to meet, relax and connect.

Led by young people, for young people and the community, the project has delivered a long-lasting space that celebrates youth leadership, creativity and local pride.

What we delivered

The Mary Davies Street Makeover has delivered:

  • A brighter, more welcoming walkway at Mary Davies Library and Community Centre
  • Colourful pavement murals and ground games designed by young people
  • Road-safety messages that encourage slower driving and safer use of bikes and eRideables
  • New and refreshed seating, and chill-out zones
  • Hands-on opportunities for young people to learn placemaking, design and construction skills
  • A youth-designed launch event and “final touches” session to celebrate the space with the community, planned for the Saturday 14 February, 2026.

Mary Davies Street Makeover 2025 - Build Week

Local young people have transformed the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre walkway into a vibrant, safe and social space.

Youth leadership and co-design

Young people were at the heart of every stage of the project. Through RAC Ignite and the Rockingham Youth Reference Group, local young people:

  • Attended an Information Night and Placemaking 101 workshop to learn about street makeovers and community safety
  • Took part in co-design sessions to shape the overall look and feel of the space
  • Helped choose themes, colours, games and messages for the murals and furniture
  • Rolled up their sleeves during Build Week and the Final Touches session to paint, plant and build on site.

In total, dozens of community members – including 39 young people – were directly involved in co-design and build activities, helping to create a space they can be proud of.
