The City will begin excavating sand at Mersey Point Jetty on 21 September 2026, between 7am and 5pm.
The works are expected to be completed in approximately five working days.
- Days 1-3: Sand will be excavation from the beach north of the jetty.
- Days 4-5: Sand will be excavated from the beach south of the jetty.
Operational use of the jetty will not be interrupted during the works. The section of beach where excavation is taking place will be temporarily closed to the public; however, where possible, one side of the jetty will remain open to maintain beach access while works are undertaken on the opposite side.
The excavation is required to assist with seasonal sand accretion management at the jetty footprint. Prevailing summer seabreeze and winter storm activity contribute to the sand build-up at the jetty and requires management to bypass the sand to the north and back pass the sand to the south.
Excavated beach sand will be placed further up the beach to the north and south of the jetty for beach renourishment.
