Please, watch out
for penguins
Boat owners, please keep an eye out for Little Penguins this summer.
Sadly, penguin numbers are declining, with watercraft collisions
accounting for 25% of deaths. Penguins like to travel just below the
water surface and are difficult to spot, particularly when it’s choppy.
As a result, they are very susceptible to boat strikes which may cause
life threatening injuries or death. If you are using your boat within the
Shoalwater Islands Marine Park or Cockburn Sound, please go slow,
and keep a look out for penguins and other wildlife.
If you notice any injured or dead penguins in the area, please notify the
City on 9528 0333 or the Department of Parks and Wildlife Wildcare
Helpline on 9474 9055.
