Thieves Stealing Thousands from City Residents

10/05/2018

Thieves have targeted the multi-user birds nest swings from playgrounds across the City of Rockingham. Several have been stolen from parks and reserves in Baldivis, Secret Harbour Waikiki and Golden Bay.

New birds nest swings will be installed over coming months, however at a cost of $3,000 per unit ratepayers are bearing a considerable cost as a result of the thefts.

Birds nest swings are very popular with children because they can swing alone, with a friend or in small groups, and they can swing from side to side and around in circles, as well as the traditional forwards and backwards motion.

Mayor Barry Sammels said he was disappointed that local children were being denied the opportunity to enjoy these popular pieces of recreational equipment due to the brazen thefts from local parks.
“The City puts time effort and money into making our playgrounds appealing, and to have people steal something like this is very disappointing,” he said.  “The kids love these swings. Unfortunately thieves are spoiling the fun.”

These are premium pieces of recreational equipment and they should be in public places for everyone to enjoy. So if you’ve see anything suspicious, or see one of them for sale on the internet or appear in someone’s backyard please contact Crimestoppers.”
