Calling All Young Leaders

Date24 September 2025

Young people in Rockingham are being encouraged to have their say on local issues, with applications now open for the City of Rockingham’s 2025 Youth Reference Group (RYRG).

The RYRG is a volunteer group of 15 people aged 15–24 who provide advice to the City on matters important to young people. Members also contribute to the planning of local programs, services and events.

No previous experience is required, with the City seeking applicants from people who are enthusiastic about representing youth voices and contributing ideas to improve community life.

City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said the RYRG provides advice to the City, ensuring young people’s perspectives are considered in decision-making

The Rockingham Youth Reference Group gives young people a voice in how the City develops opportunities and services that matter to them.

RYRG meet regularly and members also take part in community events and workshops.“It also provides members with the chance to build leadership and teamwork skills, while contributing in a meaningful way to their community.”

The recruitment drive comes at a time when local governments across Western Australia are increasingly working to strengthen youth engagement. The WA Department of Communities actively encourages councils to establish Youth Advisory Councils and reference groups, which give young people a structured way to contribute to planning, programs and services at a local level.

The City’s RYRG aligns with this broader state-wide movement and with the WA Youth Action Plan 2024–2027, which highlights the importance of giving young people a seat at the table in decisions that affect their lives.

The group meets regularly at the Rockingham Youth Centre and members also take part in community events and workshops. Participation provides opportunities for professional development, volunteer hours and experience in leadership and communication.
