Cr Schmidt Elected as Deputy Mayor

Date29 October 2025

Councillor Robert Schmidt has been elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Rockingham, following a closely contested vote at a Special Council Meeting held on Tuesday evening.

This marks Cr Schmidt’s first term as Deputy Mayor since joining Council in 2021, when he became one of the youngest councillors in the City’s history. He will serve in the position until October 2027, representing the Comet Bay Ward and supporting Mayor Lorna Buchan in leading the City and its community.

Mayor Buchan welcomed the result and praised Cr Schmidt’s leadership qualities.

"As Deputy Mayor, Cr Schmidt will bring energy, empathy, and a grassroots understanding of local issues to the role,” Mayor Buchan said.

“His commitment to transparent governance and community-led decision-making is reflected in his active participation across numerous committees and advisory groups. I look forward to working closely with him over the coming years.”

The Special Council Meeting also saw the appointment of elected members to the City’s Standing Committees, Occasional Committees, Advisory Committees, Panels, and Non-Council Committees for the 2025–2027 term.
