Date24 December 2024 The City of Rockingham welcomes the recent announcement that the federal and state governments will jointly fund a series of studies into how best to resolve the growing pressure on the local transport network as AUKUS gathers pace.
The funding will enable:
- a study of options for roads, infrastructure and local transport
- a detailed environmental study of the Garden Island Highway Proposal, and
- a detailed heritage study and constraint mapping exercise of the Garden Island Highway Proposal.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin said: “The City has been advocating for many years to both state and federal governments for a feasibility study into the Garden Island Highway to see if it can provide a viable solution to the issues caused by the growth in traffic to and from HMAS Stirling on Garden Island.”
The proposed studies will assist in determining an appropriate transport solution to address traffic associated with HMAS Stirling, and an assessment of the associated environmental and heritage issues. The studies will provide some certainty to the various stakeholders and the community involved and will allow planning for the project, or alternatives, to be pursued.
“We are very pleased to see the state and federal governments are now looking seriously at how to enhance infrastructure and connectivity in Rockingham as our community accommodates the local-level impacts of AUKUS,” Mayor Hamblin said.
