Proposed Lake Richmond Footpath

Date13 January 2023

The City of Rockingham is proposing to construct a new footpath along the northern fringe of Lake Richmond in Rockingham to enhance safety and accessibility for community members.

To deliver inclusive access between Safety Bay Road and the Lake Richmond boardwalk on the north-eastern side of the lake, as well as access to picnic shelters, the City plans to deliver a two-metre wide concrete footpath that runs adjacent to the lake along Lake Street.

The footpath will be approximately 575m long and will not affect any of the native vegetation that surrounds Lake Richmond.

The project will be delivered in line with the City’s Lake Richmond Management Plan, with funding support for the footpath to be provided by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Mayor Deb Hamblin said the City valued the community’s input in helping to shape a safe and sustainable City.

“Lake Richmond is one of the most environmentally significant nature reserves in WA, and is one of the largest freshwater lakes on the Swan Coastal Plain,” Mayor Hamblin said.

The lake is a popular spot for the local community and visitors alike, and is home to the internationally significant thrombolites. Every day our community take the time to explore the stunning flora and fauna in the area, and the proposed footpath will allow for improved access around one of our biggest environmental sites.

“We understand the importance Lake Richmond holds for many people in our City and as the site holds significant Aboriginal heritage value the proposal has been presented to the City’s Aboriginal Advisory Group. These plans will also be presented to the South West Land Council in February.

“The City values the community’s feedback and encourages residents to share their thoughts on the proposed footpath.”

Public comment on the proposed footpath closes on Friday 3 February 2023.
