Rockingham Youth Centre Featured at WA Architecture Awards
Date14 June 2022
The award winning Rockingham Youth Centre (RYC) has been featured as part of another major awards ceremony, with the architectural work of the facility recognised at the WA Architecture Awards on Thursday 9 June 2022.
The WA Architecture Awards were hosted by the Australian Institute of Architects, which is the peak body for architecture in Australia. The awards recognise architectural excellence and the innovative work of the Institute’s members.
The project architect for the RYC was SITE Architecture Studio, and SITE’s work on the RYC was recognised with the EmAGN Project Award. The RYC’s recognition as part of this event follows on from the facility recently winning the Community Facility of the Year award at the 2022 Parks and Leisure Australia WA Awards of Excellence.
Located on MacKinnon Street in Rockingham, the RYC is open to young people aged 12 – 24 and provides opportunities for them to engage with a wealth of programs and initiatives in a safe environment.
City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin congratulated SITE on the award and said their contribution had played a vital role in the RYC becoming a purpose built facility for young people that promoted diversity and inclusion.
“The delivery of the RYC was a key part of the City’s Strategy for Children and Young People 2018 – 2023, and collaboration with young people through the Rockingham Youth Reference Group (RYRG) was crucial to ensure it reflected the needs of the community,” Mayor Hamblin said.
SITE Architecture Studio played a key role in this process, helping to design the RYC in a manner that aligned with the vision of the RYRG and the City. The end result is an inspired community facility that has fostered pride with RYC members, which will serve young people in our community with a variety of important programs and activities for many years to come.
“It is pleasing to see work on the RYC contribute to SITE’s deserved success at such a prestigious event.”
