Council Backs Iconic Rockingham Beach Cup

Date31 July 2020

At the ordinary council meeting on Tuesday 28 July 2020, the City of Rockingham Council resolved to support the Rockingham Beach Cup 2020 by providing $175,000 in funding to event organisers Palm Beach Rotary Club.

The Rockingham Beach Cup, which has previously been held in 2016, 2017 and 2019, is a two day festival of events that culminates with a series of horse races along the Rockingham Beach Foreshore.

The event is unique in Western Australia and drew an estimated 16,000 people to the Rockingham Foreshore over the course of the event in 2019. More than 7,000 of these people were visitors from outside of the City. Research that analysed the economic impact of the event in 2019 found it injected a total of $1.3 million into the local economy, including nearly $600,000 in visitor expenditure.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the Rockingham Beach Cup was an iconic event that aligned with the City’s Tourism Destination Strategy and its new Economic Development Strategy.

“Since the event was established four years ago, the Rockingham Beach Cup has played a vital role in enhancing the City’s local economy and its profile as the place where the coast comes to life,” Mayor Sammels said.

“The Rockingham Beach Cup is a unique and iconic tourism event, which aligns with the State Government’s Diversify WA plan and its priority sector of tourism, events and creative industries.

This year’s edition of the event provides a major economic and tourism marketing opportunity for the City, as it could be one of the first large scale events of its kind to take place in WA as the state continues its COVID-19 recovery.

“The timing and nature of the event also aligns with the vision of the City’s Rediscover Rockingham tourism marketing brand, which is aimed at marketing Rockingham to attract visitors from across our state to come and visit Rockingham.

“Given the potential economic and tourism benefits to the community, plus the fact the 2019 edition delivered a significant return on investment, the City of Rockingham Council is happy to provide funding to support this important iconic event once again.”
