Proposal
The City has received an application under the Metropolitan Regional Scheme (MRS) for ‘public work’ proposed by Western Power to install a community battery energy storage system (BESS) at San Sebastian Reserve, Port Kennedy. The City has the management order for this land with its purpose being for recreation.
The BESS is proposed to be installed to the southeast of the existing transformer infrastructure, to the eastern corner of San Sebastian Reserve. The purpose of this BESS is to supplement the existing San Sebastian transformer, improving power reliability and enabling further uptake of rooftop solar in the surrounding neighbourhood. The BESS will store excess solar power generated by the grid, which can then be drawn upon during peak times to reduce the strain on the grid. The project will comprise the following:
- Establishment of a single 7.5 m (L) x 2 m (W) x 2.8 m (H) acoustic and thermal enclosure, containing:
- a 100 kW / 400 kWh BESS system, comprising three CATL batteries in isolated compartments
- an ATESS inverter
- mains switch board and communication system
- underground cabling, and
- concrete foundation supports
- Enclosure to be treated with an artistic mural.
Plans to support the application are listed below.
