Project summary

A playground designed for people of all ages and abilities to play together.

Taking its inspiration from the nearby beach, the underwater-themed playground is designed to be a place where people of all ages and abilities can play together.

Families will enjoy exploring the playground, which encourages imaginative play and provides a range of different challenges.

This project received funding from the Australian Government, Lotterywest, and the Rotary Club of Rockingham.

The award-winning Harbour Playground has been designed to cater for all abilities.

The playground has areas that provide different play areas experiences and levels of adventure:

  • raised platform 
  • underwater cave
  • adventure play area
  • sand area
  • coral-inspired quiet zone
  • toddler and baby play area

Platform underwater cave

One of the most unique features of the park is the underwater cave and giant orange octopus, made of softfall so you can climb the tentacles to get to the raised platform where you can see across the sand dunes of Secret Harbour Beach.

Discover all the ways to get from the ground level to the platform and back again. As well as the giant octopus, there are slides, banks, a whirlpool net and a footpath that will help people get from one level to another to explore the platform and underwater cave.

Accessible and inclusive

The Harbour Playground is somewhere that people of all ages and abilities can play together. Some of the key features of the park that make it accessible and inclusive are:

  • Softfall and concrete paths throughout the playground so that people in wheelchairs or with mobility issues can access the play areas including the platform, the underwater cave, the octopus tunnel, the sand and water play table, the cruise line swing, and the roundabout. 
  • Interpretive signs teaching about the ocean creatures hidden throughout the park is also written in braille.
  • Colours, sounds, and textures create sensory play throughout the park.
  • The baby and toddler play area is a safe space for the youngest members of the family with shade, seating, and softfall play pieces to support those learning to walk or crawl.

There are lots of amenities that help to enjoy time spent at The Harbour Playground, including:

  • a fence around the playground
  • seating and shade throughout the park
  • two undercover barbecues, one of which is wheelchair accessible
  • public toilets at the Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club, which is a short distance from the playground.
