Project summary

We have demolished and replaced the skate park at Veteran's Memorial Reserve.

A 2015 audit of our skate parks recognised that the Port Kennedy Skate Park needed replacement.

The location of the skate park on a reserve with toilets, playground and car parking provided an ideal opportunity to upgrade the popular facility to cater for more young people and families.

The design process included asking our Skate Reference Group, and young people in some of the local primary schools, what they would like to see at the new skate park.

With that feedback in mind, the new subdistrict level youth space is designed to:

  • provide more space for riders
  • provide a bowl element
  • cater for skate, scooter and BMX riders of all skill levels, and
  • provide an activity for those who aren't riding.

The skate park complements the existing reserve uses, and is able to host skate and scooter clinics and competitions.

The new skate park design features a raised bowl and flow zone, connected to the large open skate plaza that has ramps, manual pad, ledges, rails, stairs and transition extensions.

There are two large shelters for friends and family to enjoy watching the riders, that also provide a good view through the rest of the reserve including the new basketball half-court and existing playground areas.
