The City of Rockingham has been successful in receiving funding from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to administer the KidSport program.

On 22 August 2023 the State Government announced changes to the KidSport program which included increased funding, uniforms and equipment costs included and easier access to the program for asylum seekers, refugees, and children in care.

KidSport makes it possible for eligible children to join a not-for-profit sport or recreation club, by contributing up to $300 (per eligible child, per financial year) towards club registration and other agreed fees.

To be eligible, children must:

  • live within the City of Rockingham
  • be aged 5-18 years
  • have a Health Care Card or Pension Concession Card.

If you do not have a Health Care Card or Pension Concession Card, but suffer from financial difficulty, please contact us to determine if you are eligible to receive funding.

Applicants can apply for KidSport funding to pay fees for a number of registered clubs. Funding is available to cover fees of clubs that are registered for KidSport with the City of Rockingham. Clubs now accept KidSport vouchers for uniforms and equipment costs. It is up to the a club if they want to offer this option, once a club opts in then parents can apply for vouchers to pay for eligible uniforms and essential equipment. It is optional for clubs to list uniform and equipment fees.

Eligible items include:

  • Essential uniforms required by the KidSport approved organisation to be worn when participating and competing, such as club-based playing uniform.
  • Essential equipment each child is required to own to participate in the sport, such as:
    • tennis/squash rackets
    • hockey sticks
    • shin guards or knee pads.

Special considerations

Special considerations are replacing the existing KidSport Financial Exception process.

The special consideration process aims to provide easier access to KidSport for families in financial crisis, asylum seekers, humanitarian entrants, and children in care.

Eligibility criteria

The child or family must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Family experiencing significant financial distress (loss of main income source, death/serious illness of main income earner or other extenuating circumstances).
  2. Family impacted by natural disaster (for example fire, flood or cyclone).
  3. Child has been placed into the care of extended family or alternate long-term living arrangements.
  4. Child is in the care of the State (this includes foster care).
  5. Child or their parent/guardian is an Asylum Seeker, refugee or other humanitarian entrant.

A special consideration will need to be supported by or applied for on their behalf by an approved support agent.

To discuss eligibility, please visit the special consideration page and contact KidSport to be put into contact with an agent.

The list of registered clubs is continually growing, so if the club you would like to join is not currently registered, please contact us on 9528 0333 to discuss if it is eligible to become a registered club.

How to apply

Equip Me

Equip Me for Sport was originally developed in the City of Gosnells in partnership with the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries and Fair Game Australia, and following its success, will kick-start in the City of Rockingham for the winter season in 2023.

The purpose of the Equip Me for Sport Rockingham initiative is to assist low-income families in the City of Rockingham to access second-hand sporting equipment required to participate in local sports.

The Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries will send promotional emails to KidSport recipients within the City of Rockingham, and to targeted community organisations concerning the Equip Me for Sport initiative in early March 2023.

For more information on the Equip Me program and eligibility, please contact the City on 9528 0333 or customer@rockingham.wa.gov.au.
