All stories were inspired by one of the paintings from the City’s art collection paintings: ‘(Light) House of the Rising Sun” by Julie Podstolski.
With $2000 in prizes the City of Rockingham Short Fiction Awards is one of the biggest short story competitions in Australia.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels congratulated the first place winners: “The artwork for this year’s competition had a great coastal vibe and lighthouses seem to lend themselves to all sorts of interesting metaphors and stories for the creative-minded.
“On behalf of the City of Rockingham, I would like to congratulate this year’s major winners: Open Category, Guy Salvidge from Western Australia with his gritty crime story ‘Frank’, ‘Place Across the Water’ by Vickie Walker from New South Wales in the over 50s category and ‘The Whales’ by second time winner of the Young Writer’s Category: Brynnie Angharad Rafe from Victoria.
“Thank you to our wonderful judges this year who did a fantastic job selecting these outstanding entries”
This year’s competition judge, KA Bedford said of the Open Category winning entry: “I love a lean, mean crime story, and here was exactly that.
“Title character Frank wakes one morning in his car next to this lighthouse, with no memory of how he got there or what happened the day/night before. Classic, even maybe a cliché setup, but done well. Frank starts to try and find out what's going on, and why he's got a mysterious $5000 in his bank account. Intrigue and hijinks, leading to a very satisfying resolution follow. This was a great piece, and I award it First Prize with no reservations. I hope the writer does more of this kind of thing.”
