I am looking forward to several major projects starting to take shape in 2017. Work will begin on stage 1 of the Rockingham Foreshore Master Plan in April. The $10 million project takes in Railway Terrace, a new Beach Plaza, The Boardwalk (between Railway Terrace and Val Street Jetty), and the Wanliss Street carpark. It’s going to be exciting to see this area transformed into a vibrant, well-connected pedestrian location that attracts visitors from within and outside Rockingham, and stimulates the local economy.
To add to this, an Inclusive Play Space will be built in Secret Harbour, the Golden Bay Sports Pavilion, Singleton Sports and Community Centre, and the Baldivis South Sports Pavilion will be completed and construction will start on the Baldivis South Community Centre.
All of these projects, and others, will help to shape Rockingham into the sort of place you have told us you want: a place with a tourism lifestyle, a strong community, a sustainable environment and quality leadership. We will be coming back to you to review these Community Aspirations during the year when we update our Strategic Community Plan 2015-2025, and I look forward to having some engaging and thought-provoking discussions with you about the future of the City of Rockingham.
As always, we have a great range of events and activities lined up for the community in 2017 including the addition of fireworks to our Australia Day celebration. One of the highlights of our events calendar, this year’s celebrations will begin with a Citizenship Ceremony at our Administration building in the morning and then continue on at Churchill Park on the foreshore from 5pm to 8.30pm with live entertainment and free kids’ activities. The fireworks will provide the climax to the celebrations at 8pm.
It’s sure to be another great year and I wish you all the best for a happy and prosperous 2017. On a personal note, I’m hoping that 2017 will be the year of the West Coast Eagles and that they finally win another grand final.
