Christmas Message From Mayor Barry Sammels

15/12/2017

As another year wraps up, and the unwrapping of presents gets closer, it’s a good time to look back and think about the big events that have shaped our lives. As Mayor, I can look back on a very productive year for the City of Rockingham.

During 2017 we completed new sports facilities in Singleton, Golden Bay and Baldivis, created a shared path for residents to travel safely between Warnbro train station and the Baldivis shopping precinct, and implemented a new three bin system to increase recycling and reduce waste to landfill. These are major accomplishments which will have a long term positive impact on our community.

Another long term positive impact has been the influence of our outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Hammond. I would like to thank him for his leadership of the organisation for almost a decade. His strategic guidance of operations at the City has created an efficient, best practice culture underpinned by sound financial management. We wish him all the best for the future.

While Christmas can be a very enjoyable time of year for some people, for others it can be a real challenge, particularly those who may be lonely or isolated. If you are feeling overwhelmed you can contact Lifeline on: 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue: 1300 224636 for support.

Although this is called ‘the silly season’ we really need to make sure we are even more careful around this time. If you drink alcohol, do it responsibly. That means planning your trips in the car so that if you have been drinking, you won’t be driving. It also means being careful around water. Alcohol is involved in a tragic number of drownings and serious water-based accidents every year. So enjoy the water, but don’t drink and drown.

This time of year can be wonderful. I hope it is for you. On behalf of my fellow Councillors, and all the staff at the City of Rockingham, I wish you all a very merry and safe Christmas.

Mayor Barry Sammels
