Rockinghams Population Rockets
Date Published: 1/04/2011
The latest statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics released yesterday rate the coastal haven of Rockingham with the second largest growth rate in the State at 3.9% in 2009/2010.
By June 2010 the City had gained an additional 3,900 residents, second only to Wanneroo which gained 6000 new faces, closely followed by the City of Stirling with 3, 300.
The top five Local Governments with the largest growth include Wanneroo, Rockingham, Stirling, Swan and Armadale, with a combined increase of 18, 900 people, which accounted for more than one-third of the growth across the state.
These additions to the outer suburban fringe population come despite a slow in the overall growth rate of Western Australia (WA) down to 2.2% from 3.1% the previous year.
The estimated resident population of WA has now reached 2.29 million people, representing just over 10% of Australia's total population.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels said the City is planning ahead for more large population increases over the next 20 years: “Experts predict our population will grow from 104 000 to more than 164 000 by 2030.
“This is a very exciting time to be living in the City of Rockingham; land is under development here that is in the fastest growth corridor in Australia.
“The City is attractive to people for many reasons such as competitive land pricing and relaxed lifestyle, we also have a strategic coastal location with close proximity to transport hubs and sea ports.
“The challenge of a rocketing population for Council and City Officers is to ensure growth is planned for in an orderly and constructive way that meets the needs of a diverse population.
“The City has the advantage of having one of the fastest and most efficient Planning Departments in the State which will help to keep up with future demand.”
