Photo Voice 2011

Date Published: 16/06/2011

Entries for the third annual Act-Belong-Commit PhotoVoice Rockingham amateur digital photography competition are now open.

The competition asks entrants to take photos under the ‘Act-Belong-Commit’ theme on how to keep mentally healthy. Each entry must include a short descriptive paragraph explaining the photo; giving the photo a ‘voice’.

Last year saw an overwhelming response from the community with more than 450 photos entered, over 5000 hits to the PhotoVoice website, 12 digital photography workshops for students and a three-week photography exhibition, all culminating in an Awards Presentation attended by about 200 members of the community.

Photos can be entered under non-modified or modified photographic styles. There are nine prize categories, including cash prizes of up to $500 for first place, and gift cards kindly supported by local businesses The Good Guys Rockingham, PhotoCoffee and Rockingham Shopping Centre for second and third place.

Entrants can enter under one of three age categories; 12 years and under, 13 -17 years; and
18 years and over.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels described last year’s competition as a great success: “Last year’s competition was heart-warming and thought provoking; we received so many inspiring entries.

“Mental health means something different for everyone and the exhibition was a reflection of the rich diversity of our local community, showing there are lots of ways to care for your mental health.

“The PhotoVoice competition helps to promote an understanding of how to foster mental wellness increasing knowledge, understanding and awareness of issues related to mental health.”

“In 2011 we would like to see many more entries from the community. The PhotoVoice website has been updated for 2011 and all details about how to enter, categories, theme and prizes can be viewed at www.photovoice.com.au.”

“What does being mentally healthy mean to you? I encourage everyone to get involved and take photos of people in our community acting, belonging and committing in their everyday lives.”

All entries are due Friday 2 September 2011 either through electronic submission via the website or by dropping the digital image off in person to PhotoCoffee on Kent Street, Rockingham.

Selected photos will then be printed and displayed in a three week exhibition at the Gary Holland Community Centre from 28 September – 20 October 2011.
