New Waste Education Centre Opens

Date Published: 16/12/2011

Next time you visit the Millar Road Recycle Facility, keep an eye out for its unique new landmark, a giant pelican made of items found at the Landfill such as a kayak for a beak, a chest made of a car bonnet and ceiling fan ‘feathers’.

The new artwork heralds the opening of a new Waste Education Facility for the City of Rockingham and was created by Challenger Institute of Technology Sculpture students over two terms to raise the profile of recycling.

Officially opening today, the new Education Centre will be named after the City’s first Waste Education and Promotions Officer, Ken James, who retired in 2010.

Kelly Baulch, Waste Education and Promotions Officer, has been excitedly anticipating the completion of the new facility: “I am delighted the centre will now provide a much needed appropriate facility to share the Waste Education Program with visitors and school groups.

“It’s built on environmentally sensitive principles the centre faces north east to make use of natural light and capture afternoon breezes. The design incorporated a thermal wall, louvered windows, fans, smart wiring and solar panels.”

“The centre will primarily be a learning facility where people can learn about Waste Services and recycling for a sustainable future.

Kelly will be taking bookings for 2012 from today. If your school or group is interested in learning about recycling and waste services, please telephone: 9528 8550.

Kelly’s Top Recycling Tips:

• No food or liquids should go into the recycle bin, so rinse or empty and contents beforehand
• When purchasing products look for minimal and recyclable packaging
• Remove lids from bottles and jars, which can go into the recycle bin
• Plastic bags should be returned to the recycle bin provided by leading supermarkets, and not in your home recycle bin
• Empty aerosol cans can be recycled, separate the lid and nozzle beforehand
• Separated cardboard, soft plastics, and polystyrene are free to recycle at the Millar Road Landfill and Recycle Facility.
