Have you made a resolution to be more physically active in 2010? Do you enjoy walking in your local area? Would you like to get out more and meet new people in Rockingham while doing something positive for your health?
If you have answered ‘YES’ to any of these questions then Heart Foundation Walking is for you! Heart Foundation Walking aims to increase community participation in regular and enjoyable physical activity and is inviting walkers to join groups in their area.
A local parents walking group was started in late 2009 as part of the Heart Foundation Walking program. The group is called PRAMS (Parents in Rockingham Area Meet and Stroll Group) and meet every weekday at 8.00am for a 45 minute walk along the Safety Bay foreshore. All parents and bubs are welcome to come along and the stay for a chat afterwards. It’s a great way to ‘find 30’ and meet some local parents at the same time.
To join this group please contact Bec Richards on 0439 111 371 or to start another walking group please contact the City of Rockingham’s Health & Wellbeing team on 9528 0435.
The Heart Foundation recommends people should aim to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity (such as brisk walking) on most, preferably all the days of the week. Joining a Heart Foundation Walking group with Rockingham is an excellent way to help you reach this goal.
“Joining a Heart Foundation Walking group in your area can help you stay motivated to exercise regularly whilst providing you with social support, health information and newsletters. There are groups catering for a wide range of ages and fitness levels,” said Trevor Shilton, Director Cardiovascular Health. “We encourage people to ‘walk and talk’, so it’s very much a social outlet as well as an activity program and everyone is welcome.”
With the warmer temperatures, longer days and balmy evenings, summer is an ideal time to get moving and get outside. It’s also a great time to start working towards achieving some of those healthy lifestyle goals that you set for yourself for the New Year.
