Local Government Elections this Saturday
Date Published: 14/10/2011
There is still time to vote in the 2011 Local Government Elections. Postal votes needed to have been mailed by Monday 10 October. However, people can still drop votes into the City’s Administration Building in person until Friday 14 October at 4:30pm or on Election Day, Saturday 15 October between 8am to 6pm. The Ballot box is located at Reception’s front counter.
The public are welcome to attend the vote count, which will be conducted in the Reception Room at City’s Main Administration Building, from 6pm sharp. When all votes have been counted, Ward Councillors for the next four year tem will be announced.
People who have misplaced their voting pack can fill in a replacement one on Friday 14 or Saturday 15 October.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels encouraged people to submit their votes: “There is still time to have your say in selecting the people that will represent your community and make decisions that affect you in the future about planning, development and facilities for your area.
“If you would still like the opportunity to vote, drop your form into the Administration Building by 4.30pm this Friday or you can come along on Election Day.”
“As of Wednesday, 12 October, according the WAEC, we have received 5397 votes for Rockingham Ward which is 27.95% of the total packages sent out, 2599 votes for Coastal Ward, which is 33.89% of the total packages sent out, and 6469 votes for Safety Bay Ward, which is 25.68% of the total packages sent out.”
The City of Rockingham conducted a postal election in conjunction Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC). Postal voting packages were sent to all electors in wards with elections in mid September.
The voting system used in the Local Government Elections was ‘first past the post’ in which electors indicate the candidate, or candidates, of their choice by placing a tick in the box opposite the names of the chosen persons, up to the number of vacancies to be filled, with candidates being elected in order of the number of votes they receive.
Results will be available on the WA Electoral Commission Website: www.waec.wa.gov.au from late Saturday night and they will be published in the West Australian Newspaper on Wednesday 19 October.
There will be a Special Council Meeting held on Monday 17 October 2011 to swear in the new Councillors and elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
