Local Government Election Results 2011

Date Published: 18/10/2011

Nine candidates competed for five vacancies in this year’s Local Government election, with results announced late Saturday night.

There was one vacancy for Coastal Ward filled by Chris Elliot with 1884 votes out of 2678. The two vacancies for Rockingham Ward were filled by Allan Hill and Joy Stewart with 2666 and 2866 votes respectively.

The two vacancies for Safety Bay Ward were filled by Leigh Liley (4396 votes) and Ron Pease with  4008 votes.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels said after last night's swearing in ceremony for new Councillors as well as the Mayoral vote: “I would like to welcome Ron Pease to Council and I congratulate Councillors Liley and Stewart on their re-election, which shows their community appreciates the work they are doing on their behalf.

“Oh behalf of Council I would also like to express my gratitude for the leadership, dedication and integrity, which outgoing Councillors Brian Warner, Les Dodd and Paul Ellis have contributed to their roles on Council.

“I would like to welcome Allan Hill and Chris Elliot back to City of Rockingham Council, and I am delighted to continue my duties in representing Council as Mayor following the vote last night, and congratulations to new Deputy Mayor, Deb Hamblin.”

Held every two years, 50% of the 10 elected member positions become vacant at each ordinary election. Each Councillor is elected for a four year term, which will expire in October 2015.

Elections are conducted by postal voting with all eligible residents forwarded voting papers for their respective ward for completion and return by prepaid post.

The ‘first past the post’ system is used for Local Government elections, in which electors indicate the candidate, or candidates, of their choice by placing a tick in the box opposite the names of the chosen persons, up to the number of vacancies to be filled, with candidates being elected in order of the number of votes they receive.
