Green Group at Bungaree

Date Published: 1/08/2011

Naragebup’s Environmental Centre staff together with Green Group members braved the rough weather conditions on Thursday 28 July, to remove invasive weeds and plant 300 sedge and melaleuca plants at Bungaree Drain, with another 700 expected to go in this week.

The project aims to improve general water quality, stop rubbish flowing further down the drain and into Lake Richmond. The additional plants will provide shelter, food and nesting areas for native water birds and create a habitat environment on the island.

Supported by the City, the initiative falls under the Lake Richmond Management plan and the Urban Wetlands Monitoring and Integrated Catchment Management Plans.
Christine Comer, Natural Resource Management Officer, Rockingham Environment Centre, was on site on Thursday and was pleased with the work carried out by the Green Jobs Team: “This project has been great experience for the team.

“They have made a really positive contribution to improving this wetland area for the local residents, and more importantly, the native water birds.

“It has been hard work in the winter weather of the last couple of days, but they have quite enjoyed getting out there in the water and on the island.

“The planting is a new process for them and will increase their skills and knowledge in this area.  It is projects like this that highlight wonderful community partnerships between young adults and youth in the Rockingham area, with the vital support of the City of Rockingham and encouragement form the Rockingham Environment centre to continue their efforts.”
City of Rockingham Mayor thanked the Green Group and Environment Centre for their dedication to the local natural environment: “The City is proud to partner with the Environment Centre and the work being done by the Green Group at Bungaree is an investment in the ecology and health of our local waterways.

“Your efforts will help to preserve our coastal and bushland reserves for future generations to enjoy.”
