Get to know Your Neighbour on Neighbour Day
Date Published: 17/03/2011
Get to know your neighbours on National Neighbour Day, Sunday 27 March, and be a part of building a more inclusive and enjoyable community.
Residents are invited to come and meet their neighbours for a free sausage sizzle at Veteran’s Memorial Park, Port Kennedy from 10am-2pm on Sunday 27 March.
Neighbour Day this year also marks the City of Rockingham’s launch of its Community BBQ Project, which supports residents in organising their own Neighbour Day BBQ during April. Hosts will go in the running to win a brand new BBQ from Bunnings Warehouse and receive a free information kit containing food vouchers, tips and invitations.
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels is on board for Neighbour Day: “Neighbour Day encourages everyone to meet their neighbours, helping to create safer and happier communities for people.
“Neighbour Day aims to breakdown the barriers of disconnection, loneliness and isolation experienced by the elderly and people who live alone.”
Singleton Community BBQ Saturday 30 April
The Singleton Resident Association has registered for the Community BBQ project and will hold their own Community BBQ for residents. The free community event takes place on Saturday 30 April and locals are encouraged to come along to get to know their neighbours in the area. Neighbourhood Watch representatives will be attending on the day to provide residents with information on how they can be involved in helping to build a safer community.
National Neighbour Day was founded in Melbourne in March 2003 by Andrew Heslop after the remains of a forgotten elderly woman were found inside her suburban home two years after her death.
