The City of Rockingham is investigating community interest in the development of a community garden. The City of Rockingham in partnership with Great Gardens will run two free gardening workshops, with presenters sharing their knowledge on the best Western Australian specific Waterwise gardening practices.

Participants will learn how to use less water and fertiliser, save time and money and enhance the appearance of their garden. They will be given the opportunity to sample a range of the latest sustainable garden products and take home information on garden design, improvement and management.

Workshops are full of humour as the Great Gardens Team highlight unsustainable gardening practices and dispel many gardening myths, replacing them with practical techniques that result in success at a fraction of the current cost and use of resources. Good for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

Great Gardens Workshop – Tuesday 23 February 2010 from 11.00am to 2.00pm at Secret Harbour Community Centre. Topics covered include: environmental consequences of current gardening practices, understanding and improving your local soils, fertiliser tips and tricks, greenwaste recycling, suitable plans for your area, principles of design, waterwise irrigation, attracting wildlife to your garden, lawn establishment and care and more.

Great Food Gardens Workshop – Wednesday 10 March 2010 from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at the Gary Holland Community Centre. Topics covered include: environmental consequences of current home grown food gardening practices, getting started, types of food gardens, growing fruit and nuts at home – even in small gardens, understanding WA soils, pest management and more.

Community feedback questionnaires on a community garden will also be available from the City of Rockingham’s webpage www.rockingham.wa.gov.au
