Funstation Urban Art Competition

Date Published: 24/11/2011

To coincide with the Rockingham Funstation’s re-opening celebrations and rebranding as the Playground, up to 20 local artists have registered to compete for public recognition in a four-day Urban Art Expo to decorate the new improved venue.

The competition ran from 10am to 4pm across two weekends in November, with the first wall painted from Saturday 19 to Sunday 20. The final instalment took place last Saturday 26 to Sunday 27, 10am to 4pm, with ten participants painting one wall per weekend.

The murals will have a ‘playful’ theme and each artist must incorporate a children’s cartoon character into their artwork
Community members are encouraged to come along and vote for their favourite artwork. The Urban Artists will be competing for attractive prizes with 1st place attracting a $500 prize, 2nd prize is $300, and 3rd is $200.
Votes can be submitted inside the Playground. Each voter will go in the running to win a weekend escape to Margaret River for up to four people.

Skilled Urban Artist DAZEL was on hand to provide training to young people interested on how to correctly and legally use aerosol paints to create art.

City of Rockingham Mayor said the City was happy to help reduce graffiti vandalism hotspots: “The Playground is helping reduce graffiti vandalism with this project.

“Research shows that urban art reduces the frequency of unwanted ‘tagging’ of private property. I look forward to seeing the new and colourful artwork.”

The Playground has funded all the paints for the project and a City Youth Worker will be on site to manage and facilitate the Urban Art Expo.
