Daniel Kelley Skate Park Launch

Date Published: 19/10/2011

Daniel Kelley Skate Park at Rhonda Scarrott Reserve in Golden Bay will be launched this Saturday 22 October.

Mayor Sammels said the $289,000 insitu concrete facility took two months to construct and will provide local kids with a much anticipated multi-wheel facility, suitable for a range of ages and abilities:

“Facilities such as the new skate park offer young people the opportunity to enjoy active recreational activities, in a challenging, but safe environment.

“In an era where digital entertainment is increasingly popular, young people spending time outside with their friends are doing their bit to keep themselves healthy and socially active.

“The creation of this park would not have been possible with out the considerable input of our local community, parents, young people and the Golden Bay Progress Association (GBPA), local young people and community members were involved in the process from site selection to final design.
“I would like to acknowledge the generous support of the Department of Local Government, Department of Housing and Satterley Property Group in this significant City of Rockingham initiative.

“This project is a very positive thing for youth in Golden Bay who had very little in the way of recreational facilities, I hope it is meeting place for fun, friendship and physical activity well into the future.”

Community consultation was an important part of the site selection and concept of the facility. Local young people and residents worked on the concept plan at two workshops of about 30-40 attendees.

Skate park architect Convic was appointed to design the facility based on the feedback from the workshops.

Once a preferred site was identified the GBPA surveyed approximately 830 households in Golden Bay in October 2009 which showed strong support for the park.

The park will be named in honour of local young leader Daniel Kelley who tragically passed away from a sudden illness in 2002. Daniel rallied the community to develop a skate park and was successful in having a temporary skate facility installed at Golden Bay.

The Skant Team have volunteered to organise Skate Demos and Competitions for kids attending the opening.
