City Reduces Carbon Tax Impacts
Date Published: 17/10/2011
City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels spoke this morning about the new Carbon Tax, which was passed through Parliament’s Lower House this week:
“The City has completed a preliminary costs impact analysis on residential waste that is sent to the Millar Road Landfill facility.“The City was one of the first Local Governments to establish a gas power generation facility at the Landfill and we have been capturing methane gas from the Landfill and converting it into electricity for about eight years.
“In the 2009/2010 financial year, the methane destroyed was equivalent to 68, 282 tonnes of CO2.
The equivalent of removing 16,654 cars from the road for one year.
“This places the City in a good position to mitigate some of the financial impacts of the Carbon Tax, particularly on domestic household waste pickups, which City Officers estimate will be approximately $8 per household per year. The City’s Methane Capture Program is set to reduce costs to residents by more than 75%”.
“We need more details from the Federal Government for estimates on commercial and industrial waste. However we will be investigating grants for Local Governments and additional funding sources to offset costs.”
