Date Published: 28/01/2011
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre this morning issued an alert for Western Australian
coastal areas from Jurien Bay to Albany, including Perth, Bunbury and Busselton.
Expected to hit the coast in about 48 hours, Severe Tropical Cyclone Bianca is a Category 3 storm and is moving in a south westerly direction at about 33 kilometres per hour.
The cyclone is expected to gradually weaken as it approaches the coast on early Sunday morning, but in the event that it remains a Category 3 with wind gusts of between 165 to 224 kilometres per hour, residents and business owners need to be aware of the potential impacts of the storm.
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels has issued a reminder to coastal residents to stay safe and prepare their properties for the approaching storm:
“The City urges all residents to take sensible steps to secure their safety and the safety of their family, pets and property this weekend.
“Cyclones can be a dangerous natural force causing storm surges, heavy rainfall and destructive winds.
“People should ensure branches and treetops around the home are trimmed and loose items are removed put away and secured around the home.
“Avoid being exposed outdoors or driving during the storm. Check you are covered for cyclones under your insurance policy.
“Severe storm events can sometimes cause injury and loss of life, structural damage and disruption to services.
“Keep informed this weekend via the FESA or Bureau of Meteorology websites, or listen to ABC radio for updates throughout the weekend”
