Castaways Winners Announced

Date Published: 9/05/2011

Winners of the region’s most prestigious sculpture competition were announced at the Castaways Exhibition launch on Saturday 7 May.

Peppermint Grove artist Kathy Allam was the major winner of Castaways Sculpture Awards 2011 Alcoa Award for sculpture with an aluminium component with Navigator, made from recycled metals.

Judges Amy Barrett-Lennard, Director of PICA and Alan Dodge AM, Arts Advisor and former Director of AGWA, said the work was a marriage of simplicity and possibility which managed to evoke architectural ideas such as temples and pagodas.

Winning artist, Kathy Allam was overwhelmed to be named as the overall winner: “I'm still digesting the wonderful news. I'm delighted, I'm happy but I'm still in shock.

“I would like to acknowledge the generous support of all the sponsors, especially Alcoa and the City of Rockingham, and all the people who worked so hard to make Castaways possible, particularly Lyn DiCiero.

“The high standard of the exhibition was impressive, so winning this award has been quite overwhelming. Being recognised by judges of the calibre of Alan Dodge and Amy Barrett-Lennard has been a huge encouragement and affirmation. So, thanks to everyone who has made this possible.”

Speaking at Emma’s Restaurant on Rockingham Boardwalk, City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels said the Castaways Exhibition and Awards highlighted two areas of great significance to the City:

“The City of Rockingham is committed to partnering with our generous sponsors to support cultural opportunities for our residents while promoting and highlighting the importance of recycling and sustainability.

“All the artworks you see in this outdoor exhibition have a recycled component. It is interesting to see how participants have adapted their work to express the message of recycling. It is an important message for our times.

“The quality of the entries this year has again raised the bar and the judges had a very tough time of it deciding on the first prize winner.

“I would like to commend all of this year’s winners and indeed entrants, including the artists that applied to be exhibited but were not selected for the exhibition this time, and I would encourage them to submit entries for future Castaways Exhibitions.

“I encourage locals and visitors to stop in at Rockingham over the next week to enjoy the inventive, quirky and delightful sculptures on our award-winning Rockingham Beach.”
