Carnegie Wave Energy Trials Success

Date Published: 9/05/2011

Wave energy developer Carnegie announced last week the completion of the successful offshore trial of its commercial scale CETO 3 unit.

An environmentally friendly energy alternative, the CETO system converts wave energy into zero-emission electricity and desalinated water.

The system operates out of sight and is anchored to the ocean floor. An array of submerged buoys is tethered to seabed pump units. The buoys move in harmony with the motion of the passing waves, driving the pumps which in turn pressurise water that is delivered ashore via a pipeline. High-pressure water is used to drive hydroelectric turbines, generating zero-emission electricity.

City of Rockingham Mayor, Barry Sammels today commended the project, hailing sustainable energy as a growth industry with the potential to bring employment and economic benefits to the area:

“The City is very pleased the wave energy trial has been successful, and we extend our congratulations to Carnegie and its workers who have made the testing phase of the project a success.

“Renewable, sustainable energy technologies such as wave energy are the way forward for our planet.

“Green, sustainable power that harnesses natural processes is a cleaner source of energy, helping to negate the effects of global warming and pollution and will be needed to meet the energy demands of future populations.

“When complete this will be Australia’s first commercial scale wave energy project and we believe sustainable energy will be important to the future of our region, offering so much potential to generate employment and investment in the area.”

Carnegie’s Perth Wave Energy Project is located offshore in the ocean between Garden Island and Five Fathom Bank at a depth of approximately 25 metres. The next phase of the project will involve the finalisation of the design for a grid connected commercial demonstration project.
