Volunteering in the City

The City of Rockingham provides volunteering opportunities for community members to be involved in City events and programs. The City’s Community Development team calls for volunteering assistance in the following areas:  cultural development and the arts; youth services; health and wellbeing; seniors; and community events.
 

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering provides many benefits for both you and your community. Through volunteering we can build strong communities by connecting people. It also gVolunteers at the annual Seniors' and Carers' Expoives you an opportunity to:

  1. Help others, including community groups, clubs, seniors, schools, young people and the environment.
  2. Share your skills and life experience with others.
  3. Gain a sense of community connectedness and social wellbeing.
  4. Meet new, like-minded people.
  5. Gain the experience, training, contacts and references that may help you find paid employment.
  6. Improve your own health, vitality and wellbeing.

To volunteer at the City, you will need to complete a Volunteer Expression of Interest Form and forward it to customer@rockingham.wa.gov.au or hand your completed form into the City Administration Building. A new Rockingham Volunteer Centre will soon be opening at the Rockingham Central Library which will provide a one-stop place for managing volunteering opportunities in the City


What happens next?

As volunteering opportunities become available, we will contact you about 4-6 weeks before the relevant event takes place to see if you would like to be involved. If you are interested and a position is available, you will be required to complete the relevant volunteering registration form and obtain a Volunteer National Police Certificate prior to being appointed to a volunteering role.

The City will obtain your Volunteer National Police Certificate on your behalf. Please complete the consent form and bring it into the City Administration Office with relevant ID for proof of identity.  Volunteer National Police Certificates can take up to five working days.  Once your application has been processed you will receive confirmation of your involvement in the identified event.

Ways to Volunteer

Castaways Sculpture Awards

Castaways Sculpture Awards is one of the City’s highlights on the event calendar held in October each year. The event sees artists design and produce sculptures from recycled materials, displayed on the foreshore over 10 days. Volunteers are required to help at the information tent.
 

Youth Advisory Council

Young people aged 12-24 who are keen to be more involved in their community, and advocate locally as a voice for young people can join the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). Meetings are held twice a month and YAC events are held throughout the year.
 

Rockingham Connect Community Transport Service

The City has two buses that are used for community transport, taking people who are transport disadvantaged to various places in the City: Rockingham and Warnbro shopping centres, Safety Bay Library, Autumn Centre, Bunnings, Social Connector Luncheon and Spud Shed.

Volunteers are needed to drive the buses (two 12 seaters). Varied shifts are offered to suit people’s availability. To apply for a volunteer position see the Rockingham Connect page.
 

Autumn Centre

The City offers people over the age of 50 a communal environment to socialise, pursue personal interests and create supportive networks at the Autumn Centre on McNicholl Street in Rockingham. The Autumn Centre relies heavily on volunteers and is an excellent opportunity for community members to participate in a worthwhile program.
 

Heart Foundation Walk Leaders

The City works in partnership with the Heart Foundation to encourage people to engage in walking as a form of physical activity. If you are interested in being a walk leader, someone who facilitates a group of people to come together and go walking, then you can contact the City for more information or see the website for current walking groups to join.

Rockingham Arts Centre

The City presents several exhibitions throughout the year.  Volunteers are required to assist with staffing the exhibitions, mostly on weekends and public holidays. 

Exhibition hours are normally 10am to 3pm with two shifts available: 10am to 12.30pm and 12.30pm to 3pm. 

All volunteer exhibition staff are given a briefing prior to the exhibition to enable them to provide valuable information on the exhibition and to assist with general enquiries from the public.  Rockingham Arts Centre external photo

Volunteer staff will be required to complete a National Police Certificate Consent Form. The City will organise this on your behalf.

We are currently looking for volunteers to staff the following exhibitions:



Bush Babies: Honouring the Elders in the Bush
Exhibition dates: 26 May to 11 June 2017

The Bush Babies Exhibition is a touring exhibition managed by Art on the Move in partnership with the Community Art Network.  The exhibition is being presented in recognition and acknowledgement of Reconciliation Week.

Dates available are:
27, 28 May and 3, 4, 5, 10 and 11 June.

Shadow Art Exhibition
Exhibition dates: 24 June to 2 July 2017

The Shadow Art Exhibition is the result of the City’s Teachers' Professional Development Program.  Teachers, students and community members will display their works created using the skills taught during the Paper Cutting Art workshops held in February and March 2017, alongside international artist Tusif Ahmad.

Dates available are:
24, 25 June and 1, 2 July.

Rockingham Volunteer Centre: Now Open

The Rockingham Volunteer Centre will promote volunteering in the Rockingham community and will be located at the Rockingham Central Library, Dixon Road, Rockingham.  The centre will:

  • List volunteer positions that are available in the area
  • Link people with volunteer opportunities that best suit them
  • Promote volunteerism in the community

Volunteer Involving Organisations (VIOs)

If your organisation or group is looking for volunteers, the Rockingham Volunteer Centre will also be able to assist with:

• Finding suitable volunteers
• Volunteer management
• Volunteer training opportunities
