Neighbourhood Watch  - neighbours helping neighbours

Neighbourhood Watch is a community based program aimed at reducing preventable crime through communication and cooperation between neighbours. It’s free to join, simple to participate in, and can involve everyone in the community.

With over 7,400 members (as at March 2011), the City of Rockingham is recognised as having one of the largest and most active Neighbourhood Watch schemes within Western Australia. The success of the scheme is largely due to the enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers, who play a major role in promoting safety and security in their community.

Burglary Prevention Cocooning Project

The Burglary Prevention Cocooning Project is a joint initiative involving City Safe, Rockingham Neighbourhood Watch, the local Police and the Office of Crime Prevention.

The Project involves the distribution of burglary prevention information to residents living in areas where burglaries have occurred. The aim of the Burglary Prevention Cocooning Project is to encourage residents to be extra vigilant about their home security, to report incidents to the Police and to actively participate in crime prevention programs such as Neighbourhood Watch. Residents receive a letter from the local Police, home security tips checklist, Neighbourhood Watch newsletter and registration form to encourage their involvement.

Between June 08 and August 09, Neighbourhood Watch volunteers delivered over 6500 Burglary Prevention Packs to residents living in areas where burglaries had occurred. Follow up letters were delivered to residents on streets where repeat burglaries had occurred.

Burglaries are plotted on Suburb maps to identify any burglary hotspots. This information is used for planning targeted interventions such as community safety educational displays, Neighbourhood Watch Barbecues and letterbox drops. The Community Security Service and Rangers also use the information to carry out targeted patrols. Since the commencement of the project, there has been a significant reduction in residential burglaries, from 140 in July 08 to 53 in July 09.
