East Rockingham Pioneer Cemetery

East Rockingham Cemetery was established in 1866 and the first interment was of Joseph Broughton, on 13 October 1867.  The exact location of his plot is not known, however a plaque to commemorate his interment has been placed on the front stone wall of the cemetery in the Anglican A section.

For the following sixty years, East Rockingham settlers were buried in the cemetery without any records being kept.  In 1929, the Roads Board realised the scope of the problem and with the assistance of the Karrakatta Cemetery Board, long time local resident John Bell was called upon to assist with the recording of names and locations of persons buried in the cemetery.

Still, a burial register was not started until 1937 and many earlier interments that are not marked with a headstone, are unknown.

In 1993, the cemetery was enlarged and the new area was laid out as lawn sections. Also in 1993, the first niche wall, made of granite, was built and a further four brick niche walls have been constructed since this time. 

In 2007 the name of this cemetery was officially altered to include the word “Pioneer” to better reflect the historical significance of the cemetery to the Rockingham region. On 1 November 2007 an agreement was made with the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board for the undertaking of burials and placing of ashes at East Rockingham Pioneer Cemetery.

On 30 June 2009 the cemetery was officially closed to the issue of new grants of burial, however existing grants may continue to be honoured in accordance with the East Rockingham Pioneer Cemetery Burial Policy, a copy of which may be viewed at Council-Policies-January-2010

All enquiries in relation to burials or the placing of ashes should now be directed to the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (website) or by calling 1300 793 109. However, horticultural and maintenance issues are still the responsibility of the City of Rockingham.

Rockingham Regional Memorial Park

To serve the community, the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board is establishing a new facility, Rockingham Regional Memorial Park, in Baldivis Road, Baldivis, close to the Kwinana Freeway entrance at Mundijong Road.

This new facility is designed to provide a regional facility for generations to come. All enquiries in relation to burials or the placing of ashes should be directed to the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board.

Memorials seats and plaques

The City has in place policies to govern the placing of memorials seats and plaques. Information on the placement of plaques and memorial seats can be found below.

Waikiki Memorial Wall

The Waikiki Memorial Wall was originally designed as a feature wall with the placing of memorial plaques suggested by a resident. Since this time it has proven to be very successful and well received by residents.

The wall is located at Waikiki Foreshore just a few metres south of the Safety Bay Road and Malibu Road intersection. It had rapidly filled up since its inception with the last space on the wall being reserved in 2005. Therefore no further space was available on this wall apart from the reserved plaque locations.

As part of the redevelopment of the Waikiki Foreshore and due to erosion and the current wall's instability, the Memorial Wall has been replaced with a new wall in the same vicinity.  Completion of this stage of the Waikiki Foreshore development is expected to be completed by April 2011.

The works will include having all plaques currently located on the wall, removed, securely stored for a period and then reinstalled on the new memorial wall in the same physical order as the are currently displayed.  It is hoped that further places will be available on this new wall for additional plaques.  Enquires can be directed to 9528 0381 or by email to council@rockingham.wa.gov.au

Rockingham Memorial Wall

As the wall at Waikiki has reached 100% capacity, Council approved the use of another wall at Rockingham Foreshore that is actually a granite seawall incorporated into the promenade between Railway Terrace and Val Street, Rockingham.

 Roadside memorials

It is an unfortunate occurrence that loved ones are lost to traffic accidents within the City. Council has a policy in place to allow the placing of Roadside Memorials following the loss of family or friend.
