Rockingham Shopping Centre
Extensions - new retail Main Street
In August 2007, the City of Rockingham approved a major redevelopment of the Rockingham shopping centre. Key aspects of the redevelopment include:
- An additional 9,019m² of retail floor space
- An eight screen cinema with over 1600 seats
- Provision for a new ‘retail main street’ (Syren Street) at the eastern end of the shopping centre, linking Contest Parade with Civic Boulevard
- A space for the creation of a new Civic Plaza
- Upgrading and improvement of the existing retail spaces and malls
- Expanded car parking of 3,100 bays
- Improved car parking and access.
The redevelopment will result in the total retail floor area increasing from 47,171m2 to 58,857m2.
A major initiative of the redevelopment involves the creation of a ‘retail main street’ at the eastern end of the shopping centre. As part of the initial redevelopment works, 11 tenancies and the new Ace eight cinema complex, will front directly onto the ‘retail main street’, called Syren Street. There are two additional street front development sites on Syren Street which will be developed by the shopping centre as demand dictates.
The majority of the internal shopping centre works have been completed. The ‘retail main street’ opened in mid 2009, with some of the street front tenancies opening at the same time. The new Ace Cinemas opened in September 2009.
The expansion of the shopping centre has been achieved through a close collaboration between the shopping centre owners, the council, the Department for Planning and the Public Transport Authority. This productive partnership has allowed the eastwards expansion of the shopping centre onto the former Transperth bus station site, the construction of the ‘transit street’ (Contest Parade) and the development of the ‘retail main street’.
